Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is strongly linked to type 2 diabetes and occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver due to insulin resistance, obesity, and high blood sugar. People with type 2 diabetes are at greater risk of liver inflammation, fibrosis, and cirrhosis.
Because MASLD often has no early symptoms, regular screening is important. Major risk factors include obesity, poor diet, inactivity, high cholesterol, and hypertension.
Management focuses on weight loss, healthy eating, exercise, and better blood sugar control. Some diabetes medications may also improve liver health and help lower the risk of serious complications.
